Industry Report
Private Equity & M&A in Ireland: H1 2026
Ireland’s M&A market carried its momentum into 2026, with deal activity holding firm against a backdrop of geopolitical uncertainty and shifting global trade dynamics. A total of 262 transactions were recorded in the first half of the year, up 7% year-on-year, reinforcing Ireland’s position as an attractive destination for both domestic and international investment.
In-market activity was a defining theme of the period, with in-market transactions climbing 49% as buyers deepened their confidence in Ireland’s business environment, skilled workforce and export-oriented economy. Private equity activity eased, with 16 PE-led deals marking a 38% decline from the exceptional levels of recent years — though deal-making continues to sit well above pre-2024 norms. Fundraising remained robust, with €6.2bn raised across 89 funds, underlining the depth of capital available to Irish businesses.
Looking ahead, while global risks remain, Ireland’s economic fundamentals and depth of international interest position the M&A market well for sustained activity through the second half of 2026.
Private equity is a form of investment where a firm provides capital and strategic support to established private companies to help them grow, in exchange for an equity stake. At Renatus, we back profitable Irish and UK SMEs with the capital, expertise and network they need to reach their next stage of growth. The investment is managed by the Renatus team, who are backed by proven entrepreneurs and institutional investors such as ISIF. Depending on your goals, this can be structured as a minority or majority investment – there is no single template. To see the deal structures we use, read about our approach.
Yes. Renatus partners with profitable, ambitious businesses headquartered in Ireland and the UK, investing €5m–€20m of equity per deal. We typically look for companies generating €2m+ of EBITDA, or €3m+ of ARR for SaaS businesses, with a target holding period of three to seven years. We are always open to a confidential, no-obligation conversation to see if we are the right fit. If that sounds like your business, get in touch with our investment team.
Renatus is largely sector-agnostic but prioritises a number of core areas: B2B specialist services businesses; B2B SaaS and technology businesses; critical infrastructure and utility suppliers and service providers; fragmented sectors with roll-up opportunities; and accredited suppliers into food and pharmaceuticals. We do not invest in property or pre-revenue businesses. Beyond sector, we look for a proven CEO or management team and a business generating €2m+ of EBITDA, or €3m+ of ARR for SaaS companies. It depends on the deal – Renatus makes both minority and majority investments, structured around what suits you and your business. If you want to retain control and take on a growth partner, a minority investment lets you do exactly that. If you’re looking to release value, de-risk personally, or plan a succession, a majority deal, management buyout (MBO) or shareholder sale may fit better. There is no fixed structure: we start from your objectives and structure the deal around them. To understand the options, read our guide on taking on private equity investment as an Irish founder.
Yes. As our portfolio companies grow, they are regularly hiring — and we work with them directly to make key strategic and executive appointments. We are always keen to hear from experienced C-level leaders, non-executive directors and investment professionals who want to help build fast-growing SMEs.
